The Congress voted to "stop the clock"
on the Colombia FTA. As long as trade leaders are killed with impunity
and there is "so far to go" on human rights, LAWG will
oppose the agreement. Meanwhile, 63 members of Congress have sent
a letter to President Uribe about the recent wave of violence and
threats against human rights defenders.

The first installment of the $1.4
billion Merida Initiative has been included as part of the President’s
Iraq emergency supplemental appropriations request which will likely
come before Congress in the coming weeks. We urge members of Congress
to demilitarize the Merida Initiative and instead direct resources
towards long-term solutions that promote human rights.
